How parasitic draws drain your truck battery

A parasitic draw happens when an electrical component fails to shut down after you turn off the ignition and lock the doors. Every modern truck has a normal, tiny electrical drain. This power keeps the clock running, maintains the radio station presets, and keeps the remote keyless entry module listening for your key fob. This normal draw is typically between 20 and 50 milliamperes.

When a computer module stays awake, a relay sticks closed, or a glovebox light stays on, the draw can spike up to several hundred milliamperes or even multiple amperes. Because a standard truck battery is only designed to provide around 40 to 70 amp-hours of reserve capacity, a constant 500-milliampere draw will drain the battery completely in just a few days. The challenge with modern trucks is that they contain dozens of interconnected modules that can take up to 45 minutes to go to sleep after the truck is shut off, meaning you must be patient to get an accurate test reading.

Step-by-step guide to locating the draw

  • Prepare the truck: Turn off all accessories, close the doors, and remove the key from the ignition. If your truck has an under-hood light, disconnect it. If you need to access an interior fuse box, latch the door clicked shut manually with a screwdriver while the door stays open so the truck thinks the vehicle is locked. Wait 30 to 45 minutes for all modules to enter sleep mode.
  • Set up your multimeter: Wear safety glasses. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery post. Set your multimeter dial to the highest DC amp setting, which is usually 10A. Plug the black meter lead into the common port and the red lead into the 10A port.
  • Connect the meter in series: Attach one test lead to the disconnected negative battery cable and the other lead to the negative battery post. The meter will display the current electrical draw. If the reading is above 0.05 amps (50 milliamperes), you have a parasitic draw.
  • Pull the fuses: Locate the main engine bay fuse box or the interior passenger fuse panel. Use a fuse puller to remove one fuse at a time. Watch the multimeter display after pulling each fuse. If the amp reading does not drop, put the fuse back and move to the next one. When you pull a fuse and the reading suddenly drops below 0.05 amps, you have found the specific circuit causing the drain.

The common mistake that blows your meter fuse

The most frequent mistake people make during this test is opening a truck door, turning on the headlights, or trying to start the engine while the multimeter is connected.

Standard digital multimeters can only handle a maximum of 10 amps of current through their internal circuits. A truck starter motor draws over 150 amps, and even turning on the headlights or cycling the glow plugs on a diesel truck can pull 20 to 30 amps instantly. If you cause a high-current event while the meter is in series, you will instantly blow the fragile glass fuse inside your multimeter. Always keep the ignition off and avoid touching any switches while your meter bridges the gap between the battery post and the cable.
